Madeleine Dewolfe

Biography

Madeleine DeWolfe is a Bridgewater, Nova Scotia–based visual artist working under MJ DeWolfe Studios. Her mixed-media practice integrates painting, printmaking, collage, and photography, drawing inspiration from the coastal geology and shifting landscapes of the Maritimes. Through intuitive processes and an expressive use of color, texture, and movement, her work explores themes of transformation, resilience, and emotional connection, inviting open interpretation.

A graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, DeWolfe spent over 15 years documenting rural and coastal environments throughout the region. She exhibited widely through community venues, including farmers’ markets, craft fairs, and galleries, and was an active member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia and Craft New Brunswick.

Following a series of relocations and significant physical and mental health challenges, her artistic direction shifted. Moving away from traditional photography after a serious shoulder injury, she embraced a more fluid, process-driven approach. The observational skills developed through photography continue to inform her work, now expressed through layered, tactile media.

Since returning to Nova Scotia, DeWolfe has re-established a consistent studio practice, continuing to evolve her visual language through exploration, adaptation, and a deep connection to place.
